Little Country Theatre pays tribute

‘Peer Gynt’ performed 100 years after author’s death

For ending its 92nd season, NDSU Little Country Theatre has decided to take on “Peer Gynt,” a story by Henrik Ibsen about a young man on a search to find himself.

This year is an exciting time to perform “Peer Gynt” due to this year being the 100th anniversary of Ibsen’s death.

“ Right now everyone is working really hard on getting this production up and running. The actors are working hard on getting all of their lines down, and if you saw some of the length of lines … Well, let’s just say that it’s enough to make you weep,” student-actor Taylor Schatz said.

“ Peer Gynt” is based on a Norwegian folklore that follows the adventures of Peer.

The title character is a self-centered and opportunistic rogue who travels around the world in search of fame, fortune and ultimately, a journey to find himself.

In this play, Ibsen works on combining many different themes, including comedy, tragedy and other satire. This is a common trend of 19th-century theater.

Although some college students are big fans of this play, many are unfamiliar with it.

“ Peer Gynt” was originally adapted for the stage in 1876 from a fantasy poem that Ibsen wrote several years before.

“ Peer Gynt” will run April 6-9 and 13-14 in the Askanase Auditorium. Performances running Thursday through Saturday will begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday performances will start at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults; $10 for seniors; and non-NDSU students and NDSU students will get in for $4 with their current student IDs. Tickets are available for purchase at the NDSU Fine Arts Box Office. (701) 231-9442.
