Plains Art Museum to hold ‘Art on the Plains 9’

The Plains Art Museum of Fargo is holding “Art On The Plains 9,” the museum’s annual juried art exhibition.

The art selected will be displayed in the Jane L. Stern Gallery in the museum and is open for viewers starting Sept. 28, 2006 and ending Jan. 7, 2007.

The exhibition accepts art entries from both emerging and established visual artists around the region.

The region the Plains Art Museum serves includes North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, and Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada.

Thirty-nine of the 151 works of art entered were made the exhibit.

Sue Petry, Public Information Manager at the Plains Art Museum, said artists had to be from one of the six states listed, and couldn’t submit artwork that was more than two years old or previewed in the museum before.

Of the selected artwork, there are 10 North Dakota artists represented, 26 Minnesota artists, three South Dakota artists and one Montana artist.

An individual juror decides which art gets accepted.

Rusty Freeman, Vice President for the Curatorial Division at the Plains Art Museum, said the juror is a guest curator chosen by the museum based on his or her knowledge and expertise of art.

Christopher P. Monkhouse, the James Ford Bell Curator of Decorative Arts at The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, was that juror chosen for this exhibition.

Jennifer Carlquist, a representative from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, said Monkhouse chose artwork that was “visually striking, while incorporating the Midwest theme.”

Each entry represents a variety of media including photography, watercolor, mixed media, oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas, clay, pastel, sculpture, blown glass and graphic arts.

“ It isn’t about subject or media, it’s about how much detail is involved,” Petry said.

Artists had until June 16 to get their artwork submitted and notifications were sent out July 17 to those who were selected.

Petry also added that the exhibitions have grown larger every year and are now very competitive.

“ The exhibition is an opportunity for regional artists to be seen in an accredited art museum,” Petry said. “We are the only accredited museum located in this region outside of Minneapolis.”

To honor the artists accepted, there will be cash rewards and a People’s Choice Award given during a reception at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14, at the Plains Art Museum.

Although adult tickets are normally $5, NDSU students can attend the exhibition for free.
