Folk band performs at first ‘Live @ Lunch’

Music lovers have something to look forward to amid all the construction in the Memorial Union.

Campus Attractions’ Coffeehouse is sponsoring the first Live @ Lunch of the year, which will feature folk group Patchouli.

Coffeehouse coordinator Kodee Gartner said it was an easy decision for the first performance of the year.

She said Patchouli is laid back and has been to campus before.

They are nationally known and have toured the country many times during their eight-year career.

Patchouli is made up of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Julie Patchouli and guitarist Bruce Hecksel.

The married couple met at a church in Chicago in 1993 and toured with Hecksel’s old folk band, Aunt Betsy, until 1998.

The couple produced their first album, “Strawberry Blues,” in 1996 while on tour with Aunt Betsy

Since then, Patchouli, along with help from various friends and acquaintances, has released eight albums, including the recent release, “The Light Behind You.”

The couple have showcased their talents all over the country at many different universities and shows.

Patchouli is known for its music and how well it blends with its genre.

Mick Skidmore of Relix magazine says Patchouli “embodies everything good about folk music.”

Songs such as “Shadows” mix Hecksel’s guitar skills and vocals with Julie Patchouli’s voice and a soft percussion beat.

Patchouli will perform on campus from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Union.

Because of construction, Patchouli will perform on the balcony just outside the south entrance of Century Theater. This event is free and a Patchouli CD will be given out.
