Online film competition seeks student producers

Many students dream of becoming film directors, but rarely do they have the chance.

Now they do.

The Sci-Fi Channel, along with the Sundance Channel, is launching an eight-week film competition to crown the next film-directing champion.

Sci-Fi and Sundance Channel are currently receiving submissions of upcoming film producers’ best sci-fi, horror and fantasy short films, which generally last about two to eight minutes.

Once received, a group committee inspects the films. These experts judge and report the best selections online.

Fans can then cast their votes online at either Web site in order to find a weekly winner, which will result in eight finalists overall.

These eight short films will be featured in a special broadcast on the Sci-Fi channel, followed by online voting to find a winner for the grand prize.

The grand prize is a trip to New York City to create a project for Sci-Fi Channel’s Pictures Group.

“ Exposure is the perfect way to harness the new movement of ordinary people creating extraordinary videos for the Web,” Craig Engler, senior vice president of Scifi.com and “Sci-Fi” Magazine, said.

Deadline for entries is Nov. 21.

Online voting will start Oct. 23 and end Dec. 17.
