Junk Rock

Recycled Percussion to perform at NDSU

As the old saying goes, one man’s junk is another man’s drum kit.

Or something like that.

When Recycled Percussion comes to NDSU Thursday, they won’t be playing conventional instruments.

The group, who call their brand of music “junk rock,” drum on trash cans, buckets, ladders, scuba tanks, gas tanks, 50-gallon barrels, duct tape, giant drum kits and even their own bodies.

Recycled Percussion consists of drummers Justin Spencer, Greg Kassapis and Ryan Vezina, along with DJ Pharaoh on the turntables.

Spencer, the group’s leader, has been dubbed by many as “the world’s fastest extreme drummer.”

The band was formed seven years ago to perform in a high school talent show in the small town of Goffstown, N.H.

Since then, Recycled Percussion have played hundreds of concerts in clubs, college campuses and other venues, including NBA halftime shows.

In addition to opening for a number of national acts including LL Cool J, Godsmack and They Might Be Giants, the group has been hailed as one of the best college live acts in the country and have landed themselves on the cover of “USA Today.”

Recycled Percussion will perform in the Festival Concert Hall Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is free for students with I.D., and $5 for general public.

The show is sponsored by Campus Attractions.
