This Week's Releases


Here’s a look at the movies, music, video games and books hitting stores this week.

Movies - Tonight

There haven’t been many new movies in theaters lately, but that all changes tonight with four new flicks opening in Fargo this week. Jennifer Garner and Kevin Smith star in “Catch and Release,” the story of a woman finding comfort in two friends after the death of her fiancé.

From the writers of “Scary Movie” comes “Epic Movie,” poking fun at dozens of films released in the last year, including “Chronicles of Narnia,” “Borat,” “Nacho Libre” and “Superman Returns.”

Veterans Ben Affleck, Andy Garcia and Ray Liotta star alongside newcomers Alicia Keys and Common in “Smokin’ Aces,” a dark action film from the director of “Narc.” Agnes Bruckner stars as a werewolf in the thriller “Blood and Chocolate.”

For students on a budget, “Borat,” “The Nativity Story” and “Stranger Than Fiction” will be showing at the Safari 7 Discount tonight for the first time.

Music ­ Tuesday

Last season’s “American Idol” runner-up Katharine McPhee is releasing her self-titled debut album next week. McPhee will once again have a hard time topping Taylor Hicks, whose Dec. 12 release reached No. 2 on the charts. Norah Jones ­ whose albums have all reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts ­ will try not to break her streak with the release of her third studio album, Not Too Late.Also being released: Madonna’s live album The Confessions Tour and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s Some Loud Thunder.

DVDs - Tuesday

The animated film “Open Season,” which boasts the voices of Martin Lawrence, Ashton Kutcher and Gary Sinise will hit stores Tuesday.

College students in their 50’s will appreciate the release of “Dallas: Season 6” and season five of “Murder She Wrote.”

Also being released: “Facing the Giants” and “Looker,” written and directed by bestselling author Michael Crichton.

Video Games ­ Next Week

Sonic the Hedgehog has made his way onto next generation systems with his self-titled debut for the Playstation 3. “Fusion Frenzy 2,” the sequel to the bestselling party game, will hit stores next week for the Xbox 360.

Also being released: “City Life: World Edition,” “Blitzkrieg 2: Fall of the Reich,” and “Battlestations: Midway” for PC, along with “Earache Extreme Metal Racing” for Playstation 2.

Books ­ Next Week

Steve Berry, the author of four national bestsellers including last year’s “Templar Legacy,” has written his fifth novel, “Alexandria Link.” Berry will release one book each year for the next three years.

Horror novelist Lincoln Child is releasing “Deep Storm.”

Also being released: Lisa Gardner’s “Hide” and “Surveillance” by Jonathan Raban.
