National acts to perform at PULSE remix

Superchick, Grits and Sanctus Real to perform

Nick Hall, founder of locally based Christian ministry organization PULSE Outreach, said he didn’t expect last year’s PULSE concert to be so successful.

PULSE brought more than 5,000 students to NDSU last April to see national recording artist Vertical Horizon and other Christian bands perform.

This year, PULSE Remix will try to pull off the feat a second time April 1 at Concordia College’s Memorial Auditorium.

PULSE Remix brings nationally recognized acts Grits, Sanctus Real and Superchick to help promote a message of Christianity.

It will also feature a performance by the former world champion of Dance Dance Revolution.

Hall said the event is designed to help promote a “positive, faith-based message” to help young adults cope with important issues, while also enjoying themselves.

Hall said he also wanted to make the concert accessible to everyone.

He wanted to create an event that broke stereotypes of Christianity and didn’t seem “churchy,” but he also said he wanted to promote Christianity and the “good news” it offers.

“This is more than a rock concert,” Hall said. “It’s a spiritual experience.”

The PULSE Remix concert is youth-led. It is also fully funded by students, business and churches.

Hall and NDSU management information systems senior Jordan Halvorsen helped coordinate the event, while NDSU organization Campus Crusade for Christ helped extensively, along with other students and organizations.

Halvorsen and Hall said this is a student driven event, as it would not have been as successful without their organizational and fundraising efforts.

Because the costs were mostly covered through fundraising, the first 4,000 tickets are free to students.

Hall said PULSE helped attract national acts. A combination of organization and good timing helped pull those acts to Fargo.

Grits, a Nashville-based Christian hip-hop group composed of Stacy “Coffee” Jones and Teron “Bonafide” Carter, has had their songs featured on MTV shows and several movies. The band has shared the stage with bigger acts like Jay-Z and Outkast.

Sanctus Real is a Dove award-winning rock band based out of Toledo, Ohio. Nationally recognized on Christian rock charts, they released a critically acclaimed album last year despite personal struggles.

Chicago-based rock band Superchick gained national recognition outside Christian modern rock through the movie “Legally Blonde” and several television shows such as “Road Rules.”

Doors open at 6 p.m. April 1, and people can pick up tickets prior to the event, while supplies last, at the PULSE booth in the Memorial Union.
