This Week’s Releases

Here’s a look at the movies, music, books and video games landing in stores this week:

Movies – Tonight

There’s nothing like watching a thriller on Friday the 13th. Halle Berry and Bruce Willis star in “Perfect Stranger,” the story of an investigative reporter who poses as a temp at a powerful exec’s agency to solve the murder of a friend. Actor Ray Liotta stars as a district attorney stuck in the middle of a murder case in director Wayne Beach’s “Slow Burn.” Both films are rated R.

Also being released: “Disturbia,” “Pathfinder,” “Redline” and “Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters,” based on the popular Adult Swim cartoon.

Two foreign films, “The Italian” and “The Lives of Others,” are currently showing at the Fargo Theatre. The Midnight Movie for this week is “Animal House,” which will be shown Friday and Saturday at midnight for $5.

CDs – Tuesday

Pop rocker Avril Lavigne has just recorded her third full-length album, titled Best Damn Thing, which hits stores Tuesday. The album contains the singles “Girlfriend” and “Keep Holding On,” both of which have already received significant radio airplay. Lavigne’s 2004 album Under My Skin eventually topped the Billboard charts, and her 2002 debut Let Go peaked at No. 2.

Rock group Nine Inch Nails, fronted by instrumentalist Trent Reznor, is set to release their sixth major studio album next week. The band’s two previous releases have reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and each of their studio albums have been certified platinum.

Also being released: Canadian rock band Cowboy Junkies’ At the End of Paths Taken, Clay Walker’s Fall and Pam Tillis’ Rhinestoned.

DVDs – Tuesday

In the next few weeks a number of Academy award-nominated films will be released on DVD. Forest Whitaker’s Oscar-winning “The Last King of Scotland” will be available in wide screen Tuesday. Whitaker portrays the notorious Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.

Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett star in “Notes on a Scandal” and Hillary Swank and Patrick Dempsey star in “Freedom Writers,” both hitting stores this week.

Also being released: “Smokin’ Aces,” “The Chocolate War” and “The History Boys.”

Books – Next Week

J.R.R. Tolkien’s son Christopher has recently completed “The Children of Húrin,” a story put together from pieces of the famous author’s unpublished and unfinished works. Tolkien, the author of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” died in 1973.

Also being released: Alexander McCall Smith’s detective novel “The Good Husband of Zebra Drive” and Carol Higgins Clark’s “Laced: A Regan Reilly Mystery.”

“Bust-A-Move Bash!,” a game based on the arcade series, will be released for the Nintendo Wii, allowing eight users to play simultaneously. Sony’s obscure puzzle game “Super Rub-A-Dub” allows gamers to maneuver ducks around a maze-like tub and lead them to an exit.

Edios Interactive is releasing “Pocket Pool” for the Playstation Portable, which allows gamers to play pool against scantily-clad women. The game is rated M for mature audiences only.

Also being released: “Theatre of War” (PC), “Raiden III” and “Legend of the Dragon” (PS2).
