German artist Heidi Schwöbel featured in downtown gallery

Current exhibit features transformed  blocks of salt

During her time at NDSU, Heidi Schwöbel has been working with blocks of salt.

Those blocks will be featured in her exhibit, as well as photos of projects she has been working on during her residency.

Heidi Schwöbel is an artist at NDSU, originally from Ludwigsburg, Germany.

She is currently in the process of having her work honored at the Visual Arts Gallery located within the NDSU downtown campus.

It began April 30 and goes until May 4th, 2007.

Students, as well as anyone else interested, can enjoy viewing her work in a museum setting.

Several of the projects have been done outdoors and have disappeared as the seasons have passed by.

The NDSU Department of Visual Arts welcomed Schwöbel to Fargo last January as the James Rosenquist Artist in Residence.

Since her arrival she has spent the spring semester in her own studio and interacting with NDSU students and holding public lectures.

Schwöbel recently opened her studio to visitors who want to see where she does her work.

Schwöbel spoke at a reception during the gallery’s opening Monday evening.

“If I should find a motto for my time in Fargo, it would be inspiring, great and challenging,” shel said.  “The residency has been a gift of time, allowing me to concentrate on my work without having interruptions.”

Schwöbel said she has never done so much work with outside ambiences, and being in Fargo has influenced her greatly.

She has greatly reflected on the vast space and sky, which have had such an enormous impact upon her artwork and have given her so many artistic ideas.

The NDSU Downtown Visual Arts Gallery is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.
