Decorating your space

Options for personalizing your living area

The stores and shops around Fargo are packed with students purchasing rugs, lamps, fun posters, colorful bedding and more. School is officially starting.

Most students have already moved into their new living spaces and are trying to incorporate personal style into it.

Stores ranging from Wal-Mart to Pier 1 stock up on an assortment of back-to-school decor that students can purchase.

Stores such as J.C. Penney and Target have been expanding the college decor departments and designing bedroom sets customized just for college spaces, according to a CNN.com article.

No more are the same boring lamps and white storage bins.

Bed, Bath & Beyond offers online registries so students can make their selections online, making trendy decor easier to obtain.

The stores’ products are divided into categories such as “dig in” for kitchen utensils and “crash land” for pillows and lounge furniture.

College checklists and decorating ideas are also offered online for shopping convenience.

Moving into the residence halls, apartments or houses gives students the option of decorating their space and adding personal touches.

Although adding high-tech gadgets, fluffy comfortable furniture and perfect accessories is fun, most students can’t afford to pay big bucks for the latest styles.

“ As a college student, I can’t afford the nicest things,” Sadie Wardner, a freshman in public relations, said. “ I just pick things up as I go or when I decide I need them.”

Students spent an average of $260 on dorm decor, CNN reported. Freshmen and juniors typically spend the most money.

“ I brought stuff from home,” Wardner said. “I brought things I’m comfortable with and things that express me.”

Adding a sense of home is also what roommates Abby Fettig, a sophomore in nursing, and Amanda Asselind, a sophomore in anthropology, tried to accomplish in their space.

“ I brought in what I felt best reminded me of home,” Fettig said.

Even though the girls admitted their styles differed, they bought decorations like posters to help bring the room together.

Whether student’s styles are classic, bright and colorful, traditional, or wild and crazy, department stores have the decor to match.
