Writer’s block?
There’s hope for students who think their writing isn’t quite up to par.
The Center for Writers, located in the basement of the Library in Room 6, has a number of tutors ready to help students with their writing questions and concerns.
The Center for Writers got off to a good start three years ago with the help of the English department and Richard Shaw, the center’s director .
“ We want to help students be more confident about their writing,” Shaw said.
The staff consists of Shaw, Mary Pull, assistant director, four graduate consultants and four undergraduate consultants.
The office is open for appointments from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
One-on-one free tutoring is offered to any student with an appointment.
Consultants can help students brainstorm ideas and locate information, focus, and organize drafts.
If students already have their papers written, consultants can help create the appropriate voice, apply effective grammar and punctuation, and access and apply appropriate documentation.
Since its opening three years ago, the center has helped more than 1,500 students and faculty, Shaw said.
The center can help students have a better understanding of their strengths, weaknesses and of what they have to work on.
The consultants vary in majors and are trained to help students in all disciplines.
“ I’d like for us to continue to be a place where students and faculty can talk about their writing and get responses,” Shaw said.
The center now also offers help to students having difficulty speaking.
The center’s Web page offers many student resources on grammar, punctuation and documentation. It can also help students with genre-based writing, research strategies and the writing process.
