Motorcycles fun way to get around

With summer coming to an end, motorcyclists are counting the days before they have to pack their bikes away for the year.

A row of bikes line the side of Albrecht Drive on the NDSU campus next to the Memorial Union.

For some college students, riding motorcycles or scooters can be a huge money saver when it comes to purchasing parking passes.

There are a select number of spots that students can park their bikes free of charge while attending class.

It’s important however, to make sure that the bike fits the rider and they know how to safely drive it.

Henry Tessier, the service manager at Ma’s Cycles in Fargo, explained that although it’s important to find the right bike to fit a customer’s personality and wants, it’s imperative that they buy the right bike for their needs.

“ Sometimes we have customers come in and the bike they have in mind isn’t always the best bike to suit them,” Tessier said.

According to the North Dakota Motorcycle safety program Web site there are a number of aspects riders should look at before purchasing a motorcycle.

First, riders should make sure that both feet can touch the ground and all controls can be easily operated.

Next, riders should make sure to buy the power they need, but only as much as they can handle.

Since large motorcycles are heavy, the rider must be strong enough to push it or pick it up if it falls over.

Smaller bikes may not have the speed and performance needed to travel long distances.

NDMSP.com also writes that riders need to purchase the correct gear to be safe while riding the motorcycle.

A helmet, protective glasses, gloves, shoes and thick protective clothing should be worn at all times.

Bikes may save students money not only on parking permits but also gas as well.

“ A fuel injected motorcycle that’s driven at legal speeds can get up to 40 to 50 miles per gallon,” Tessier said. “If they’re in good shape, used bikes can get 30 to 40 miles per gallon.”

Tessier also said that the cost of tires and parts could add up to more than a car or truck though.

A motorcycle can make it around 6,000 miles before they need an oil change and rockets can make it up to 10,000 miles before an oil change.

Although men generally have more frequently used motorcycles, Tessier said that younger women are one of their largest buying groups and are the fastest growing segment in the market right now.

To ensure a proper fit, some bikes may be customized to fit a woman’s needs with height and weight.

Ma’s Cycles included an array of motorcycles including sports bikes for pleasure riding or cruisers and touring bikes for longer trips.

So, whether students are looking to take a road trip across the country or just a trip to campus, owning a motorcycle may be a comfortable, affordable way to get from one place to another.
