Sobering restrictions are a waste of time
I’m not 21 yet; however I am less than 100 days away from the wonderful age. Over Thanksgiving my dad told me that I’d wait my whole life to be 21, and I’ll spend the rest of my life wishing I was still 21.
This may be true, but it doesn’t take away the anticipation of that grand ol’ day that is slowly coming.
It’s not that I want to go out and get drunk every night of the week. I have more sense than that usually. I would like to sit around after work sometimes and have a drink with my co-workers and friends from time to time, though.
I don’t have a lot of money to spend, so I usually keep my eye out for which bars have the best drink specials.
However, to my dismay, my good friend Todd informed me this week that my own university is trying to prevent me from saving a buck or two.
North Dakota and Minnesota university representatives suggested that all happy hours and all-you-can-drink specials are restricted.
Am I the only person that thinks this is the most unbelievably stupid thing I have ever heard?
OK, let’s take away the drink specials because we think that maybe students will stop drinking so much.
News flash, you can’t stop college students from drinking. It just isn’t going to work.
You can take away all of the specials and deals you want and we are still going to drink just as much as we would have before.
The only difference is it’s going to take us longer and we’re going to be a little more broke than before.
If anything, students will just go back to getting completely trashed at house parties and that will tick the bars and restaurants off because they’re losing business.
Does our university really want to be responsible for making some of Fargo-Moorhead’s most popular bars lose money?
Generally, happy hours and specials are held early in the evening and regular prices start later. This is when most of the weekend partiers go to the bar.
We’re still going to get drunk; sorry it’s like that, but taking away the specials is only going to cause a lot of trouble and make a lot of students really angry.
I’m not even going to bars yet and it makes me mad.
If I were a bar owner, I would be going crazy right now. This is by far the most ridiculous idea I’ve ever heard.
Students are already broke as it is paying for tuition and fees on campus. Now they want to make us lose even more money by taking away the drink specials as well.
Are universities trying to promote homelessness among students?
However, making more than half the university angry isn’t going to make us say, “Oh, OK, we’ll just stop drinking so much then.”
All I have to say is good luck getting that law to pass.
