The Spectrum looks ahead
What to expect from the student newspaper
For some, respect must be earned; it isn’t automatically given.
I personally believe that as well, and last year a main goal of The Spectrum staff was to earn respect from the student body by producing a credible, professional newspaper of which the university could be proud.
As one of those staff members, I believe that goal was met.
But just as another school year has begun with new students and new classes, so has The Spectrum begun with a new staff and new aspirations.
Last week during our annual fall retreat, the staff discussed our goals for the 2006-2007 school year.
Among all of them, one goal resonated with each member of the staff: maintain a level of credibility and professionalism that will garner the student body’s respect.
In addition to earning respect, The Spectrum wants to continue to fulfill the role as a student newspaper by being the voice and reflection of the campus community.
To accomplish this goal, we want to present news and views in each issue that are important to college students.
Campus news is essential to keeping students informed and up-to-date on events. We also want to report news that attests to the fact that the university is part of the larger Fargo-Moorhead community.
Students can still find Bison Bits and the campus calendar, but watch for new elements in the newspaper that will bring a fresh, modern quality to the traditional look.
The edge section will feature unique articles on a broad range of topics pertinent to college students, as well as exploring new perspectives on everyday issues.
Those everyday issues, along with insightful, new topics, will be discussed in the opinion section. Columnists will present thought-provoking articles that range from light-hearted to serious.
Covering all aspects of Bison athletics, the sport section will not only report scores but will provide previews and analyses.
The arts and entertainment section will provide information on campus and local events, including previews and reviews.
The Spectrum is here to be the voice of the students.
Please feel free to suggest story ideas about upcoming events, issues or other thoughts. You can send an e-mail or stop by the office at 356 Memorial Union.
We would also just like to hear how we are doing in accomplishing our goals, so please let us know what you enjoy about the newspaper and what you think could be improved or changed.
We look forward to the coming year and hearing from many of you!
