South Fargo disturbance merits news conference

The Fargo Police Department responded to a disturbance in south Fargo Wednesday, Sept. 13.

No arrests were made at the time, but the case is still under investigation.

The disturbance was started between two groups of individuals.

There were allegations that one of the groups involved in the disturbance used racial slurs against the other. The disturbance escalated into a large group of people.

“ Some of those people made it more difficult to do our job,” Lt. Patrick Claus of the Fargo Police Department said. “There was a high level of emotions. Charges may be brought based on their behavior.”

Lt. Claus could not speak directly of the facts of this case because it is still under investigation.

However, Claus said, “It is normal for officers to arrive in volatile situations such as this one.”

Golf clubs were confiscated from the scene when police officers arrived.

Although Lt. Claus could not say what exactly happened in this situation — he said it is a norm for officers to separate the crowd, handcuff the disturbers and put them in squad cars.

The Fargo Police Department is continuing to monitor the area because of the flare up.

Those who were involved remain patient and calm.

“ We don’t want anyone to get hurt. We’re going to play it out and let the courts do their jobs,” Lt. Claus said.

A conference was held last Friday, Sept. 15, at the request of the media.
