Self-defense can save a life

After two recent attacks on campus, many students may feel the need to learn how to protect themselves.

To raise awareness and self-confidence in such situations, Campus Attractions offered an hour-long self-defense class Thursday.

The interactive class was held 8 – 9 p.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom. Mike Beyer, an experienced instructor, taught the class.

This is the second time the Campus Attractions Issues and Ideas Committee has sponsored an event of this type. The program is geared toward both males and females.

Ellen Kaiser, Campus Attractions Issues and Ideas coordinator, believes this type of programming is extremely important to bring to campus because of the current happenings in the area.

“ Even though our campus is one of the safest in the country, several individuals in our area are physically threatened each year,” Kaiser said. “Each and every person on this campus should know how to approach a threatening situation.”

Campus Attractions will also be addressing similar topics in December in an open forum with the Fargo Police Department.

According to www.safetyforwomen.com, it is best not to act or look like an easy target, but to look confident.

Most “fights” are won before they start, and aggressors will back down if eye contact is maintained.

The Web site also suggests always approaching vehicles with the keys ready and always being alert in parking lots, especially when it’s dark.

Students should not feel scared to ask for an escort to their cars. It is easy for someone to hide between or inside cars and catch a person off guard.

Lastly, the Web site suggests that walkers and joggers not wear headphones when walking in isolated areas at any time.

Attackers look for people they can catch off guard. A person who cannot hear because of headphones is an easy target.
