Student government proposes 2007 Election Code
Student body elections may be months away, but student government is already preparing for them.
During the student government meeting Sunday night, the senate reviewed the 2007 Election Code.
The new code has several changes from previous codes.
For instance, a candidate must receive more than one vote to be elected to the position.
In previous years, some candidates have taken the position with only one vote, sometimes from a self-nomination.
Because of this, there have been times where there is no clear winner for a position due to results showing several candidates with one vote and no one with more than that.
The new measure hopes to increase the likelihood of having a clear winner, as well as ensure the candidate was elected by at least one student other than him or herself.
The code also made provisions for special elections.
A special election would only take place in the event of a major technological problem on Election Day.
Candidates would not be allowed any additional campaigning before a rescheduled election and would have to run for the same seats as they did for the regular election.
Other revisions to the code include prohibiting negative campaigning and prohibiting campaigning in the student government office other than wearing buttons.
Internet campaigning would become the jurisdiction of the court.
The senate has not yet voted on the 2007 Election Code.
Besides reviewing the election code, student government also discussed on campus projects.
The two main ones were extended library hours and building a memorial wall for students, faculty and staff who died while attending NDSU.
