Opportunities increase for students

From dog sledding to easy Asian cooking, Memorial Union Breaks and the Outing Center offer different activities to get students out of their rooms and into the community.

MU Breaks and the MU Outing Center are trying to increase awareness of their activities.

There are many options for students to be involved in spring 2007, whether it is dog sledding or jewelry making.

MU Breaks and the MU Outing Center are part of the Recreation and Outing Center, located in the Memorial Union.

“ The MU Outing Center is used to be primarily outdoor equipment rentals like canoes, kayaks, camping equipment and cross country skis,” Phil Sarnoff, coordinator of leisure and outdoor programs, said.

MU Breaks provides non- credit, fun classes.

They are opportunities for people to learn things they probably would not be able to learn in the academic sphere, Sarnoff said.

The MU Outing Center aims to reach more students and gain interest in the outdoor activities the area has to offer, Sarnoff said.

“Most people that rented out the equipment were in the summer and were not NDSU students, faculty or staff. A lot of them were community members,” Sarnoff said.

According to the Outing Center Web site and pamphlet, some of the activities coming up for spring 2007 are cross country ski clinics, snowshoeing, dog sledding, snowboarding and skiing.

All of these programs are open to students, faculty, staff and community members.

An event that was very successful, Sarnoff said, was the canoe trip this fall.

“ We filled up the first one and there were so many requests that we ended up running a second trip the day after,” he said.

Sarnoff said he is hoping for a good turnout for the upcoming events.

“ I think people just need to get out there and give it a chance,” he said.
