First James Rosenquist Artist in Residence to share talent, insight at NDSU in the spring ‘07
Although Fargo is not the home of historical artists such as Raphael or Michelangelo, NDSU will be housing various artists from all around the world to support the thirst for artistic learning and knowledge.
The Department of Visual Arts at NDSU has announced that Hedi Schwoebel from Ludwigsburg, Germany, will become the first James Rosenquist Artist in Residence at NDSU.
Through the residency program, Schwoebel will work during the spring semester in the studio dedicated to the program at NDSU’s Downtown Visual Arts Department.
She will interact with students, hold public lectures and open her studio to visitors. She will also be living on campus.
“ NDSU is delighted to welcome our first Rosenquist Artist in Residence,” President Joseph Chapman said. “This exciting project is designed to build art appreciation at the university and in the community. I am thrilled about the opportunities our students will have as they learn from an outstanding artist.”
Schwoebel’s work has been shown in galleries throughout Germany.
For the last few years she has been working with materials including handmade paper, translucent paper, wax, earth, aluminum foil and most recently, gelatin.
She is interested in the fragile and ephemeral qualities of these materials.
“I am interested in investigating the existential dimension of life and I like to experiment with new materials,” Schwoebel said.
Schwoebel was originally trained as a sculptor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, Germany.
When beginning a new project, Schwoebel goes through a process.
“ There is an idea and an inspiration. I look at a project from different points of view,” Schwoebel said.
She begins with rough sketches to get a more precise vision of the whole.
Schwoebel is curious about the inspirations and new experiences she will encounter in Fargo.
