First snowshoe race encourages winter activity

When cold weather hits, many NDSU students may find it difficult to become motivated to participate in outdoor activities.

The Wellness Center has organized the 1st annual snowshoe race as an event to get students active during cold winter months.

“The Wellness Center is putting on the Snowshoe Race to get more people involved in the winter months,” said JoVal Schneibel, a graduate student in Nutrition and Exercise Science. “The money that is made will be used for fitness specialists to go to conferences to expand in their field.”

Concessions will be offered during and after the race, and awards will be provided to the first place winners in both the men and women’s categories.

Schneibel said that although prizes for the top finishers is still yet to be determined, the Wellness Center hopes to expand the number of prizes that will be given out next year if the event is a success.

“Edgewood already has an established snowshoe course that has been mapped out for other visitors to use during the winter months,” said Brent Parmer, associate director at the Wellness Center. “Participants will compete against each other on a one and a half mile course that is clearly marked.”

Schneibel said there is a limit to how many people can participate in the race, so those interested are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.

Students can sign up at the control desk in the Wellness Center.

The cost is $10 per person and should be paid no later than Feb. 3.

Students may bring their own snowshoes, but extra pairs will be available if participants don’t have their own.

The race will take place from 4 - 6 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Edgewood Winter Chalet in Fargo.
