Walking toward a healthier lifestyle in Fargo

Starting the spring off healthy is a common goal among people participating in Walk This Way, an annual series of walking events that kicked off Tuesday.

“Fargo Public Heath started Walk This Way four years ago as a way for people get together with as a community and do something healthy,” said Kaia Slevin, a dietetic intern at Public Health.

Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker spoke to the walkers who gathered at the Civic Center Entrance before they started their walk last Tuesday.

“It’s great to get out and exercise with others,” Walaker said.

Sixty people attended the first Walk This Way.

Some people walked outside while others chose to take the skyway and stay out of the wind.

The walk extended from the Civic Auditorium in downtown Fargo, around Elm Tree Square and back to the Auditorium.

“The entire walk was a half mile,” said Rachelle Mack, a senior majoring in dietetics who was assisting with registration.

Mack volunteered to help with registration for Walk This Way through the Student Dietetic Association.

Grilled vegetables were provided for the walkers once they returned to the Civic Center.

“April 19 was the kick-off for the new ‘Fruits and Veggies; More Matters’ campaign, which has replaced the 5 A-Day,” Slevin said.

Other walks will have drawings and prizes available.

“We have more than twenty various sponsors which help us support these events,” Slevin said.

Thirteen walks throughout March, April and May will be held at different places in Fargo.

The NDSU Wellness Center will be hosting a 2-mile Walk This Way at noon April 10.

“Students should really take advantage of the walk,” said Brent Parmer, associate director of fitness.

The Wellness Center supports Walk This Way and encourages students to prepare for summer.

“My daughter is looking forward to the evening walk hosted by NDSU,” said Cherie Moen, an NDSU employee participating in Walk This Way. “This is the first one I’ve ever done, but doing more is definitely a possibility.”

Junior dietetics major Morgan Daugs thinks the event is a good idea.

“Now is the perfect time to start exercising more,” Daugs said.

People can register online at www.fmwalkthisway.com or come to the event and register there.

“It’s always good to see new faces at the walks and we encourage people to come out and join us,” said Slevin.
