Baird hired as editor in chief

Stephen Baird, current Spectrum design editor, has been hired as editor in chief of The Spectrum for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Baird was hired Wednesday by the Board of Student Publications, the entity that oversees the student-run newspaper.

Members of the board were impressed with Baird’s outlook for The Spectrum and were confident in his abilities to produce a quality newspaper.

“I think we, as a board, felt that Stephen brought a lot of qualifications with his background, both with The Spectrum and his engineering experience,” said Noah Hall, Board of Student Publications chairman. “I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do.”

Other Spectrum staffers are confident in the decision to hire Baird as well.

“I think Steve is a good choice,” said Todd Deutsch, Spectrum sports editor. “He’s a very smart person, and I’m sure he will lead the paper in the right direction.”

Baird joined The Spectrum staff in January 2006. He is a senior majoring in computer engineering.

Baird is looking forward to the opportunity to take on the role of editor in chief.

“I’m excited for the chance to be editor in chief, and I’m hoping that under my leadership, The Spectrum will have a good year.”

While Baird does not have a traditional journalism background, his past work experiences in computer, design and art combine for a unique asset.

Baird said having a background in design and aesthetics is beneficial, as well as having experience with organizational matters.

He or she is also responsible for all printed materials and establishing deadlines.
