Fostering healthy relationships goal of new group
During college, students have the opportunity to develop new and important social and relationship skills.
Unfortunately not every student finds it easy to make new friends and maintain healthy, long lasting relationships.
Because of that reason, the NDSU Counseling Center is offering a healthy relationships group for students that focus es on building and developing these social and relationship skills.
“The purpose of this group is to teach students how to do things such as make new friends, ask people out, teach ways of maintaining friendships and developing healthy relationships at work and in the family,” said Michelle Richter, NDSU counselor and group affiliate.
The healthy relationships group was developed by the center a few years ago and is available each semester to NDSU students who wish to participate.
This semester’s group will take part in an introductory meeting and six sessions that will focus on the different areas of self-awareness and understanding, relationships, gender, assertiveness, conflict management and building trust and intimacy.
“The group will consist of six to eight members, as well as two co-counselors who will facilitate,” Richter said.
Closed weekly group meetings began March 22 and will be held every Thursday from 3:30 - 5 p.m.
During these meetings group members will participate in an icebreaker activity and then discuss the weekly topic, Richter said.
“Students who have participated typically are pleasantly surprised at how much they ended up liking the group and have said that the group helped to show them they are not alone,” Richter said.
Anyone interested in getting involved with the group should contact Darcie Sell or Michelle Richter in the Counseling Center at 231-7671.
