Student government commissioners, senators take oath

Executive commissioners took their oath to serve students Sunday, April 22 in the Memorial Union ballroom.

“I promise to safeguard the rights of the Student Body, and represent them to the best of my ability,” senators repeated in unison.

A mixture of fresh faces and returning ones surrounded the student government meeting area.

“I am super excited about the executive commission for next year,” Reimnitz said. “It is also great to see new senator faces as well as old ones.”

Josh Reimnitz and Clara Presser took the student government executive office oath with smiles on their faces.

Senators asked each executive commissioner several questions about how they might improve their position.

Serving on the executive branch of student government will be Greg Heller, academic and student affairs commissioner; Nick Rogers, finance commissioner; and Frank Michael, assistant finance commissioner.

Brianne Montgomery will hold the position of congress of student organizations commissioner again, with Brian Fier as technology commissioner and Rebecca Owen as public relations commissioner.

Rachelle Hadland was selected as government relations and intercollegiate affairs commissioner, and Anne Gassmann will be the  administrative assistant.

“I’m looking forward to representing the College of Agriculture as a senator,” said Riston Zielke, a senior in animal and range science.

Dante Miller and Melissa Mallet, former student body president and vice president, joined the senators during the swear-ins.

“It is a different view being back at the senator table,” Miller said. “I look forward to serving student government as a senator.”

Returning to the position of assistant finance commissioner, Michael offered four points of advice for executive commissioners and senators about what being part of the student government should mean.

“Respect your position. We hold a great deal of power, and it should be used correctly,” Michael said.

His second point was being informed. Know what student issues are and attend organization events.

“Third, issues will arise and some ideas will be shot down,” Michael said. “Conflict can either pull people together or set them apart. It is our choice how we handle issues.”

former colleague told him, don’t’ get mad, don’t get heated—just get better.

“Finally, ask questions—someone will know the answer. Use your resources,” Michael said.
