NDSU students join for record-breaking birthday wishes
The NDSU community has come together for a good cause.
Cards for Shane, an operation headed by student government, is bringing the NDSU community together and making a little boy’s dream come true.
Shane Bernier from Ottawa, Canada, suffers from leukemia.
His birthday is fast approaching – Bernier will be eight on May 30.
Bernier’s wish list isn’t comprised of toys or games; all he wants is birthday cards – and lots of them.
Bernier’s goal is to beat the Guinness World Record of 350 million for the most birthday cards received on a single day and people from all across the globe are trying to help him achieve this.
“This event is bringing all the students together for a great cause,” said Joe Heilman, vice chairman of the student Senate. “It is good to see students getting together and being artistic.”
NDSU is playing its part by trying to send as many cards as possible.
The student government has hosted a table in the Memorial Union to help students make and send cards.
“NDSU has a long history of successful humanitarian events,” said Amanda Williamson, senator for the College of Human Development and Education. “When we heard about Shane’s situation we knew that NDSU would come together as a community to support him.”
Along with all the support from the students and faculty, the Varsity Mart has donated two reams of paper to make cards and an NDSU T-shirt to send to Bernier.
“We will be collecting cards until the end of finals week, and we will send them out after that,” Williamson said. “The student government does not have the precise number of cards collected so far, but is looking to collect as many as possible.”
Elizabeth Reger, a freshman majoring in anthropology, has made about eight cards for Bernier. “I want to make as many cards as possible and would stop by to make a card whenever I have time,” Reger said.
Students can stop by the student government office to make their cards if they cannot make it to the booth.
Cards can also be dropped off at the various boxes placed at different locations around campus.
