Six preps ink letters of intent for NDSU

Minnesota prep star picks NDSU over Wisconsin-Green Bay, Rice and Wright State

Last Wednesday, the NDSU basketball and volleyball teams announced six players had signed letters of intent to attend NDSU for the 2006-2007 school year.

Among the six were three women’s basketball players including Tessa Wilka, a 6-foot guard from Sioux Falls, S.D. Wilka has already scored 1,000 points in her career and NDSU head coach Amy Ruley sees her as a versatile player.

“ Tessa can play either the one or the two guard position for us,” Ruley said.

Plucker, a Parker, S.D., product, is a 5-foot-11 guard who averaged 21 points, 8.7 rebounds and 5 assists for her team last year as a junior.

Plucker also shot 35 percent from behind the 3-point line and 77 percent from the foul line last season.

“ Abby is a multi-sport athlete who is an outstanding team player,” Ruley said. “She can shoot the three and rebound the ball well.”

Rounding out the class for the women is Amy Kallemeyn from Edgerton, Minn.

Kallemeyn averaged 26.8 points and 13.2 rebounds per game last season.

Kallemeyn was honorable mention to the Minnesota All-State team in 2006.

With the departure of five seniors, four of whom were impact players, NDSU volleyball coach Erich Hinterstocker has his hands full recruiting players.

He announced two players who signed, and said he expects to hear from more in the near future.

The two who signed were both outside hitters, Lauren McLaughlin of Cary, Ill., and Brooke VandenBergh of De Pere, Wis.

McLaughlin won a national championship on her USA Junior Olympic team, and VandenBergh has led her team to a 63-3 record throughout her high school career.

“ Both recruits are very hard workers,” coach Hinterstocker said. “Lauren is a savvy volleyball player and is a great athlete considering her size.”

Men’s basketball head coach Tim Miles also announced the signing of Eric Carlson from Shakopee, Minn.

Carlson is a 6-foot-5, 190-pound forward who led his high school conference in scoring and rebounding with 25.3 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.

“ He is a complete player,” Miles said. “Eric is a proven winner who was the second leading scorer on the state team his sophomore year of high school. I really love his competitiveness.”

Carlson also received offers from Rice, Wisconsin-Green Bay and Wright State.

There is the possibility of redshirting Carlson next year, Miles said.

The men’s basketball team has one scholarship remaining for this year’s recruiting class.
