Despite loss, coach happy with team’s performance
The NDSU and SDSU soccer teams made the most of their first and last seasons in the United Soccer Conference.
The Jackrabbits scored late to edge the Bison 1-0 in the conference tournament championship Sunday in Washington, D.C.
“ I thought we played really well,” NDSU head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “We had four or five really good chances to score.”
It was the last time the schools will play in a USC tournanment as both teams will begin competing in Mid-Continent Conference next season.
SDSU’s Kellyn Farrell scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute on a header past NDSU goalie Monica Morgan.
Farrell’s goal was the first NDSU had given up in five games.
Over that span, the Bison outscored opponents 27-0, thanks largely to 7-0 victory over New Jersey Tech and a 13-0 shellacking of Howard University.
Farrell was SDSU’s most potent scorer throughout the tournament, scoring three goals.
The victory marked the first time SDSU, who has only had a team since 2000, has defeated NDSU since 2001.
