No scoring frenzy: NDSU scores just 53 in victory

Despite picking up a win, the Bison were not happy with their performance against Jamestown College.

“I think it was kind of a lackluster performance on our part,” head coach Amy Ruley said. “This was an opportunity to get out and play some good basketball, other than Lisa (Bue), who came to play from an offensive standpoint. We need to find some other people that are willing to work to score.”

Bue was solid all night, leading the Bison to a 53-31 victory over NAIA school Jamestown in front of 1,176 fans at the Bison Sports Arena on Monday Night. Bue finished with 20 points, including 18 points on 8-for-8 shooting from the field in the second half.

Despite the sluggish offensive start for the Bison (7-7), the defense was there, as the Jimmies did not crack double digits until there was 2:38 remaining in the first half.

Jamestown shot just 20.8 percent from the field in the first half and 21.6 percent for the game.

NDSU junior Brenda Slyt ran the offesnse early, scoring seven points in the first five minutes of the game.

Slyt finished with 11 at halftime and was the only Bison player to score more than 5 points at halftime.

The second half belonged to Bue, who scored 14 points in the first 8 minutes of the half, stretching the lead to 23 after her jumper with 11 minutes to go.

“I was disappointed with the way I played in the first half,” Bue said. “I didn’t feel like I was doing what I should have been doing out there so at halftime we all regrouped and I thought I needed to turn it around and it worked out for me.”

The Bison controlled the paint, outrebounding Jamestown 42-26, led by Jerri Penley’s ten, which matched her career high.

The Jimmies (8-11) managed only five second-chance points in the game.

The Bison did not play flawless on defense however, and Ruley was very disappointed in the way they defended with the shot clock winding down in the second half.

“Just about every time they drove we fouled them,” Ruley said. “We accommodated them with the foul. It’s a hope and a prayer, they drive hoping they’re going to get fouled and praying if they don’t they make the shot.”

The Bison finished with 20 total fouls, 14 of those in the second half.

Arkansas State comes to town on Saturday with a 13-5 record on the season.
