Vogel, SDSU topple Bison women

South Dakota State wanted to make sure there wasn’t going to be an upset on Saturday.

Mission accomplished.

SDSU beat up on NDSU 86-45 in college women’s basketball at the Bison Sports Arena in front of 2,710 fans.

The Jackrabbits led for 38 minutes and ran away with a big win.

“We’re really disappointed in ourselves,” NDSU junior guard Lisa Bue said. “We felt like we had practiced really hard all week and had the motivation, and it just didn’t go anything like we thought it was going to.”

Megan Vogel led the charge for the Jacks (16-5), as the senior forward did a little bit of everything.

She finished with 25 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in just 26 minutes on the floor. She was 7-11 shooting from the field including 4-6 from beyond the arc.

Vogel also led the fast break on multiple occasions, helping the Jacks turn Bison mistakes into points on the other end. The Jacks turned 22 Bison turnovers into 34 points.

For the Bison (8-10) offense, Bue was the only player that scored in the first nine and a half minutes of the game, until Brenda Slyt put one back in after an offensive rebound.

“We couldn’t get our offense moving, and when we did get a look it seemed like there was a cover on the basket,” senior guard Amanda Girodat said.

The cover on the basket remained there for most of the game as NDSU shot just 25 percent from the field, 23 percent from the three-point line and 58 percent from the free throw line. The Bison were also outscored 38-18 in the paint.

“We didn’t get any scoring in our post positions, and you can’t win basketball games without some points in the paint,” NDSU coach Amy Ruley said.

Slyt led the Bison with 10 points in the game. Bue finished with nine and Emily Moran added eight.

At times on the offensive end the Bison seemed very impatient and put up some tough shots early in the shot clock.

“We kind of panic when things don’t go well,” Ruley said. “Instead of going the other way and being more sound fundamentally, we try to do things quickly, like one pass and try to score.”

SDSU had four players in double figures, led by Vogel’s 25.

Jennifer Warkenthien had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Maria Boever had 13 points and Ashlea Muckenhirn finished with 11.

The Bison do get another shot at SDSU later in the month and have plenty to learn from this game.

“We knew exactly what they were going to try to do,” Bue said. “What we learn in practice we need to carry into the game.”

The Bison have game two of their five game homestand Thursday with IPFW coming to town.
