UND student senate wary of funds

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The UND student senate wants more information on the school’s move to NCAA Division I athletics.

The senate voted on a resolution on Sunday that says it won’t support an increase in student fees to help pay for the school’s transition to Division I, until it’s known how big the hike will be.

“We understand we have to pay for this,” said William Behrman, a student senator. “But we need to see the price tag.”

“We cannot take a big stance on this until we have more information,” Behrman said. “In order to support the transition, we need more information as students.”

A consultant’s report recommends student fees increase $35 per semester next year and then a total of $72 per semester in succeeding years.

UND President Charles Kupchella and Athletic Director Tom Buning address the Senate on Sunday.

“The fees will not go higher than that on my watch,” Kupchella said of the estimated fee increase.

That will not change, Buning said.
