A book behind the rest
At the beginning of the semester, when I’m easily motivated and want to get a jumpstart on the upcoming academic months, I find myself bookless.
I don’t understand how I can be unable to get books in three out of five classes.
Granted, the bookstore has limited space to store the books and it is not the store’s fault if publishing companies are behind on orders or professors submit their book requests late, but I just want to do my homework and get it to my teachers without being penalized for incomplete assignments.
A class worth only 650 points, with 100 of them depending upon a quiz that was supposed to be due the second week of class, gave me an ulcer because I couldn’t buy a book, nor could I find anyone who had the required text.
Since I’m trying to implement a good work ethic and reduce my urges to procrastinate this semester, I was stressing over the thought of possibly missing out on 100 points so early in the semester.
I needed to make sure my teacher understood my dilemma before class. So, after checking one more time with the bookstore, I sent my professor an e-mail explaining my situation, then I visited the bookstore again before class, showed up one hour early to talk to the teacher to possibly borrow his book but had no luck all around.
The book was still unavailable and my teacher was not in his office. I then decided to hang out in the classroom and hopefully someone would show up early with the book.
Well, as luck had it, a classmate did show up early and let me borrow her text. I frantically searched for answers, scribbling down any answers I could find.
Luckily, I wasn’t the only one without a book and my professor understood about the no-book situation. Our quiz is now due whenever the books arrive in the bookstore, and I am able to sit back and wait patiently for my beloved book.
A lot of stress is put on students, especially at the beginning of the semester, when books are unavailable.
I know I start each semester with good intentions of being organized and anything negative can send me into an I-don’t-care-I’ll-do-it-later mode.
I guess patience is one of the keys to a stress-free life and no one is at fault for not being able to supply students with the desired texts, so I will just hang out and wait for my call from the bookstore informing me that my books have arrived.
