Students offer fashion advice
A pool of colors, an array of body shapes and sizes and flair of personal styles can be seen flooding from classrooms as students navigate a route across campus.
Clothing, a required accessory in most public areas, has the potential to be as powerful as words when thrown into different situations.
Although school can be an excellent time to show off the latest trends to other fashion savvy students, some believe the more risqué styles should be left in the closet until the weekend or after class.
“ Act like there is a dress code. If you can’t wear it in front of your mom, don’t wear it to class,” freshman Tara Manikowske said.
For some students, college may be looked at as a fashion disgrace because of how socially accepted comfortable clothing is on campus.
Free-flowing fabrics, along with color coordination, can bring uniform to any scrubby outfit, according to a poll of 14 apparel and textile design students.
Clothing suitable for class should be comfortable and casual, but not too sloppy. The fit should not be too baggy or tight and any blasé outfit can be spiced up with simple accessories, according to the poll.
“ Simple with a trendy accent,” senior Renee Syverson said.
College students are sometimes viewed as being lazy because of the image portrayed through dress. But in all reality, students choose to dress casually because of lack of time, energy and motivation, the apparel and textile students said.
Students often have a wide array of clothing and tend to have more time on the weekends to prepare a more mature look.
In some cases, casual attire can be viewed as unflattering or can be used as a shield covering the supposed problem areas from the rest of the world.
In order to feel beautiful in all types of clothing, one must learn how to wear clothes that fit each individual body type properly and how to adjust to ones specific body type and pair that knowledge with clothes that suit, the students said.
“Wear things that fit you. If you feel comfortable, it works for you. Something that makes you feel confident. Confidence is beauty,” sophomore Crista Bukoskey said.
For many college students, a professional career may require an overhaul on a very casual wardrobe.
The key to snagging a dream job is to dress professionally because dress has a big impact on first impressions and it expresses a more desirable personality. A tip proposed by the students is to remember different atmospheres require different styles of dress, so be prepared to transform according to the location.
“ How you dress shapes people’s perception about you,” sophomore Lindsay Nelson said.“Wear things that fit you. If you feel comfortable, it works for you. Something that makes you feel confident. Confidence is beauty,” sophomore Crista Bukoskey said.
