Agronomy Club hosts annual chili cook-off
Some students at NDSU have delicious recipes for chili that could win competitions and could even compete against the Food Network’s Iron Chef.
The Agronomy Club is hosting its fourth annual chili cook-off from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Loftsgard atrium.
The cook-off is open to anyone in any organization. Submissions can be from individuals, organizations, professors, students or anyone else who is interested in having a fun and relaxing evening meeting new people.
At 5:30 p.m. the judges will taste submissions of chili. Then participants and anyone else who shows up can eat the chili and hang out.
“ This event is just for people to socialize and eat chili,” said Sarah Gegner, who is a member of the Agronomy Club and is organizing the event.
Three professors from the Department of Plant Sciences are judging the event. They include R.J. Goos and Burton Johnson, associate professors in the Department of Soil Science, and Cal Messersmith, professor of soil science.
“ I chose these professors because they teach in different areas of plant science. J. Goos teaches soils, and Burton Johnson and Cal Messersmith both teach crop and weed,” Gegner said.
The Agronomy Club’s goal is to “provide for personal growth and encourage communication among student members, faculty and administrators in the crop and weed science and social science fields,” the club’s Web site said.
The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month in Loftsgard Hall. Membership is open to anyone in any major who is interested in crop and weed or soil sciences.
“ The club basically is a way of getting more acquainted with people in the ag business community. Attending regional and national conferences with the club helps with that too,” Gegner said.
