Indian taco sale, silent auction events set

Students and staff interested in sampling American Indian-style tacos or bidding in a silent auction for American-Indian items will be in for a treat Monday.

The annual Woodlands and High Plains silent auction and Indian taco sale will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the NDSU Alumni Center. Proceeds from the event go to fund the 17th Annual Woodland and High Plains Traditional Powwow on April 22, themed “Honor Mother Earth and Her Children.”

Jaclynn Davis-Wallette, director of the Multicultural Student Services, said local artists and the three universities donate items for the silent auction, and she hopes to make between $600 and $700. For students unsure of what an Indian taco is, it’s a regular taco in a fry bread shell.

Among the items up for bid are American Indian-themed cards, books, films, gift baskets and traditional food items including wild rice and fry bread mix, Davis-Wallette said.

“ One thing we are trying this year for the first time with the silent auction is to offer lessons in some of the Native American crafts,” Davis-Wallette said. The lessons will include making dream catchers and shawls.

“ As a way to prepare for the powwow, we have a community member who would like to provide instructions on the Native American dance,” Davis-Wallette said.

The powwow is free and open to the public and is scheduled for 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. April 22 at the Bison Sports Arena. A traditional meal will be at 5 p.m.

Tickets for the Indian taco sale are $6.50 and are available at the Multicultural offices at NDSU, MSUM and Concordia College or at the NDSU Alumni Center the day of the event.
