Sorority life hits the runway
The third annual fashion show of the Panhellenic Council was Thursday night in the Memorial Union.
Greek women from three sorority houses showed off the type of clothing often worn for Greek events.
Abby Ihrke, sophomore and president of the Panhellenic Council, said the event was a kickoff to start the spring recruitment for the New Year.
“ This is just a way for the (new) girls to start to get to know the girls that are already members of the sororities,” Ihrke said.
The three chapters of the Panhellenic Council who took part in the fashion show are Alpha Gamma Delta, Kappa Alpha Theta and Kappa Delta. The 24 models for the show were all members of one of the three sororities.
The participants displayed eight categories of clothing.
Marissa Oster, a senior from Kappa Alpha Theta, was one of the models for the formal category. During the year, sororities have formal balls and are required to dress accordingly.
Oster, a member of sorority life since the fall of ’05, was excited to take part in the fashion show.
“ It is a really great opportunity to meet people,” Oster said about Greek life.
Other categories worn by the models included meeting attire, NDSU sponsored clothing, social events, letters, sisterhood and philanthropy. Sorority life often includes different social programs between other Greek houses, both fraternities and other sororities.
Models for the social events included women in winter clothing for sledding, a Hawaiian shirt and a toga.
One aspect of Greek life includes school organizations. Many of the women involved in a sorority are part of one of the school organizations.
Kali Rheingans, a senior from Alpha Gamma Delta, was a model for the organization category.
Rheingans is a Bison Ambassador and showed off her green and yellow polo shirt to the new recruiters.
“ Greek people are involved in other organizations besides just Greek,” Rhenigans said. “Almost every organization on campus has a member of the Greek community.”
Rhenigans said having a fashion show is a more personal way to show people what Greek life involves.
The event was planned to attract 15 to 20 new women interested in Greek life, Ihrke said.
“ We hoped to maybe spark some interest in some of the girls to have them sign up,” she said.
Many women in the audience were part of one of the three sororities in the Panhellenic council. A few women not in a sorority were interested in becoming a member.
Abby Nokleberg, a business administration freshman, is planning to join Alpha Gamma Delta.
Nokleberg enjoyed the fashion show, specifically the formal wear.
“ I miss prom ... I think it would be a lot of fun to get all dressed up,” she said.
Sara Thomas, sophomore, is also interested in Alpha Gamma Delta. The fashion show gave new women a great view of all the different aspects of sorority life, Thomas said.
The fashion show was emceed by Sara Anderson and Amy Webster.
