Senate approves requests from three student organizations

Three student organizations requested funds for events Monday that would benefit the members, and each received an amount of money for that purpose.

The student senate approved three contingency requests at Monday’s meeting.

ThunderRadio asked for funds to travel to Austin, Texas, March 15 to 19 for the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference. The money would cover the registration fee, transportation and lodging.

Workshops would be held during the day at the conference, but the nights are scheduled for up-and-coming musical acts to perform.

After reviewing the request, the finance commission recommended $1,370 for the trip.

During debate of the legislation, James Klein, graduate studies senator, moved to amend the amount of money to $1,085 on the basis that student government does not usually pay for students to attend entertainment events.

Other senators spoke in ThunderRadio’s defense, saying most conferences students attend feature some form of entertainment.

Dan Eiler, college of science and mathematics senator, inquired about whether the music pass was included in the registration fee.

Josh Reimnitz, high rise/LLC senator and ThunderRadio DJ, said the fees are not separate and the registration fee includes the music pass.

Eiler urged senators to vote against the amendment because the fees weren’t split so it would be tough to subtract that money.

Clara Presser, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences senator, brought up the fact that ThunderRadio could use some new music from bands that aren’t mainstream and this conference would be a way for students to resolve that issue.

“ ThunderRadio … provides a service of entertainment so as they are going to watch entertainment that’s what they are there for,” Dean Lefor, off-campus senator, said.

The amendment failed with overwhelming majority, and the original request was approved almost unanimously.

Requests from the Ten Percent Society and Men’s Volleyball Club were also approved at the meeting.

The Ten Percent Society received $277 to send three members to the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference in Sioux Falls, S.D. Held last weekend, the conference focused on how to motivate leadership on campus throughout the Midwest, according to the official request.

The Men’s Volleyball Club recently qualified for the National Intramural and Recreation Sports Association National Volleyball Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah. The organization received $3,537 to compete in the tournament, which will be held April 12 to 16.
