Greeks sponsor coin drive, hoedown for charity

Greek Week starts Monday, and this year two exciting events are open to the entire campus: “Change for Change” and a hoedown at the end of the week.

Monday begins the first annual “Change for Change” event, sponsored by the Greek Community. The event is an intercollegiate coin war against all eight academic colleges at NDSU. Each college can come up with its own strategy for raising the most money.

“ We have met with the deans of the different colleges and have asked them to help us spread the word to their staff,” Katie Gunter, Order of Omega fundraising chair, said.

The fraternities and sororities have a weeklong service project during Greek Week every year. Usually it is contained in the Greek community, but this year members decided it would be a good opportunity to involve the entire campus.

Each of the eight colleges was given four buckets to spread throughout the departments of NDSU. Each bucket says, “Order of Omega Sponsors Change for Change.”

Colleges can do anything they want with the buckets. Students or faculty can talk to each class, and buckets can even be transported to classes to raise more money.

All the money raised will go directly to the Suicide Hotline.

“ We’ve been getting a lot of support. Some deans requested more buckets so they could have one for each department in the college,” Gunter said.

The college with the most money at the end of the week will be recognized at Bison Brevities April 12.

The college will receive a traveling trophy that will rotate after a year to the next winner.

“ For years to come, this will be a good source for college pride,” Gunter said.

Students who want to contribute money should go to either the department office or the dean’s office to find a bucket.

To celebrate the end of the week, a hoedown will take place 9 p.m. to midnight April 7 in Shepperd Arena#.

The event is free, and participants will have an opportunity to donate a goodwill offering that will go directly to the Suicide Hotline.
