Greek life cleans campus

Greek life cleaned up the campus on Saturday afternoon for Sigma Nu’s annual campus cleanup. The Greek houses gathered at the Memorial Union for cider and hot chocolate before setting out with their garbage stickers and garbage bags in hand.
Dustin Elken, president of Sigma Nu, was the brain of the operation that put the event on.
“Sigma Nu hosted, but we’re not the only Greek house on campus. This is our way of being able to expand our service event to campus,” Elken said.
The fraternities and sororities on campus often partake in non-profit, volunteering events throughout the community and campus. Greek life is involved in the Bison Service Challenge, which is an extra incentive between the houses for earning volunteer hours. Although the campus cleanup was a joint effort, each house can use the hours that were spent picking up trash around campus toward their individual house hours.
Aimee Sugden, Pi Kappa Theta social chair, was excited to get every house involved for the greater good of the campus.
“All the Greek houses have their own philanthropy events, but it’s nice to get everyone together to do one because you get to see everyone and work together,” Sugden said.
Many of the individuals participated in the clean up to be a part of a volunteer event together that helps more than just the community.
Jay Kothman, a Sigma Nu member, was happy to participate with fellow Greek members and do something for the campus that they represent.
“It’s really exciting for all of the houses to get together. We are all really glad to provide our services for campus,” Kothman said.
