Spectrum debuts new look

As we enter college I think we all want to somehow leave our mark on NDSU, whether that mark lasts a lifetime or even one day. Not everyone gets to achieve that goal, but in the case of this year’s Spectrum staff we will leave a mark that will stand for some time.
As has been tradition here at The Spectrum, the paper will often undergo a new look after a few years and we unveil that new look with the first issue of the new semester. This is a project we are very proud of, as many hours of extra work and passion have gone into designing the update.
Special thanks goes out to Jake Arnston, our design editor, Ryan McEwan, our head copy editor, Zach Doll, our former web editor, and Tyler Osegard, our graphic designer. Without your dedication and input this project would have never gotten done. Also, one last credit should go out to Rob Beer, presentation editor at the Fargo Forum, who was kind enough to take time out of his day to critique our new design. Thanks for the advice, as we did our best to implement it.
This is something that I have wanted to organize since I took over The Spectrum in early August. The idea for this redesign was inspired by last year’s Editor-in-Chief Carmen Schatz who gave me lots of advice in regards to running the paper. Through this advice she had only one agenda to push forward and that was the redesign.
Many of the students at NDSU were kind enough to partake in a readership survey where they answered questions as to how we can improve The Spectrum. One stat, showed by those who took the survey, described a need for a new design. As you can see we now boast a new flag, much more colorful than before. We have had many people request the return of a campus calendar and we have added a newer-looking one to the second page. Also, our weather updates and “your world in a minute” have seen changes as well. Finally, the inside covers to each section have different looks.
One part of the paper you will not find on the second page is the crossword, Bison Bits, and all the other comics, and games of the past. Those have been moved to the back in our brand new “study break” section, which we hope will be an enjoyable change for the students.
Please take the time while reading this issue to really look at what we’ve done in an effort to improve the paper. We put a lot of hard work and energy into making the paper look friendlier to the eye, as well as more professional.
Please feel free to give us feedback on our new design, as we may still be tweaking some of the final features of the paper. We hope you enjoy the new look.
