National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week

According to the 2006 NDSU Core Alcohol and Drug Survey, 89.5 percent of students say that they do not need alcohol to have a good time, and an event held this week hoped to raise that number.

This past week was National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week.    The theme this year was “Intoxication or Moderation, U make the Determination.”    Students were able to participate in games that showed the dangers of heavy drinking. In one game, students were told to spin a wheel and the number they landed on corresponded to a drinking scenario.

“Our point in this was to get the point across that you shouldn’t make drinking a game of chance and that you should have a plan of ways you will reduce/moderate your drinking to still have a fun night, but yet not get out of hand and make regretful decisions.” Wyatt Brossart, a senior psychology major and student community organizer, said.

National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness week is centered on intelligent decisions and moderation, not alcoholic abstinence.

“We are not saying that if you drink you will die, but rather, we are saying, that if you drink; make good choices, because in the end, it will leave you feeling better.” Brossart said.

One event is still open to students. There is a T-shirt exchange running from Oct. 20 through 31. In this event, students can bring in any item of clothing that is related to alcohol and exchange it for a free NDSU T-shirt.

NDSU has a website completely devoted to alcohol and drug prevention, www.ndsu.edu/alcoholinfo. On this site, students can find information about NDSU’s alcohol and drugs policy, how to calculate blood-alcohol content and an alcohol calorie calculator among many other things.

This website also offers information and other resources for those students who are concerned about their or a friend or family member’s alcohol abuse.
