The Provost’s Office has established two awards to highlight the importance of academic advising at NDSU.

These awards will recognize outstanding advising of individual undergraduates by faculty and by professional advisors who are committed to assisting students to reach their full potential.

To be eligible, nominees must have been employed and advising at NDSU for at least two years. Full time faculty, instructors and lecturers who actively advise individual undergraduates are eligible for the Outstanding Faculty Advising Award. Professional advisors are eligible for the Outstanding Professional Advisor Award. Individuals who have received the award within the previous five years are ineligible.

The Director of Accreditation, Assessment and Academic Advising will select a committee of six additional people to coordinate the award process and select one outstanding faculty and one outstanding professional advisor. The awards committee will consist of:
Director of Accreditation, Assessment, and Academic Advising
Two undergraduate students
One representative from the Council for Improving Advising
One faculty member who advises undergraduates
One professional advisor
One representative from the Division of Student Affairs
Winners will be selected in a two-stage process. In the first stage, students and alumni will be encouraged to nominate a deserving candidate and provide specific examples of the nominee’s exemplary advising.

In the second stage, nominees will be contacted by the selection committee and asked to provide additional information about their advising philosophies and activities.

Each winner will receive an honorarium of $1,000, will be recognized with a plaque in the Memorial Union, and will be encouraged to apply for the NACADA Outstanding Advising Award.

Winners should demonstrate the qualities that distinguish excellent advising by being: knowledgeable and accountable, accessible and approachable, caring and responsive, and genuinely concerned for each student as an individual.

Nominations will be accepted from Nov. 1 through 30. Nominees will have until Jan. 15 to submit their materials to the selection committee, which will make its decision by Feb.15. Nominations can be submitted at http://www.ndsu.edu/accreditation/academic_advising/.
