Keys wonít do victim any good

I’m writing regarding “Playing It Safe on College Campuses” (in the March 7, 2006, edition of The Spectrum).

Is that the best you can do — tell the potential victims of societal predators to “make eye contact, stay alert, have your car keys in your hand, take Kung Fu classes”?

Get a grip!

Recommending that such nonsense “usually works” is like asking Mary Todd Lincoln, “But other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, what did you think of the play?”

The laws in North Dakota make college campuses and other schools “victim disarmament zones.” For obvious reasons, societal predators do everything in their power to avoid armed citizens, so they ply their trade in such disarmament zones.

Please note:

1. Societal predators, by definition, do not and will not obey any law, rule, ban, regulation or restriction. Such limitations only affect law-abiding citizens.

2. The Supreme Court has consistently ruled the police are not responsible for the safety of individual citizens. You might want to read that again. So dial 911 and rely on them for protection at your own peril.

3. A recent study by the U.S. Department of Justice concluded that gun-control laws have had no effect on reducing crime in this country (zip, nada, zilch, none).

So instead of parroting the ridiculous, liberal-extremist, politically correct, anti-gun nonsense about Kung Fu and mind over matter, consider yourself walking across campus, when suddenly a societal predator who’s armed with a tire-tool from Sears steps out from the bushes.

Which would you rather have in your delicate feminine fist — the keys to your car or a locked and loaded .38 cal. super lightweight Ladysmith snub-nose revolver?

“ Nothing gets a man’s attention like a sucking chest wound,” is a quote from the 1970s TV series “Bosum Buddies,” starring a very young Tom Hanks.

One more quote: “I declare to you that woman must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself and there I take my stand,” Susan B. Anthony said.
