Letter: Spectrum should focus on positive
I am writing in response to the article “Miller/Mallet Declared Winner” in the April 7 edition of The Spectrum.
I was disappointed and shocked by the content of the article. Instead of highlighting a positive event, the article focused on a trivial miscommunication, specifically targeting student government.
Instead of congratulating the students of NDSU for taking the initiative to vote, the article focused on a misunderstanding. This was the biggest election turnout in the history of our university!
ITS, taking full blame, encountered a malfunction in the online voting program Tuesday morning. Chief Justice (Caitlin) Pandolfo had to make an executive decision to suspend voting for a short period of time. As a result, voting was extended until 8 p.m. Wednesday. The election results were to be announced after the votes were tallied and complaint hearings were held (if need be). The time of 10:30 p.m. was an estimate, allowing time for complaints to be filed. Nowhere in the guidelines does it specify a time to announce the results.
I think instead of bringing the court down, The Spectrum should commend them for their hard work and dedication to the students of NDSU for holding a fair election. Instead of shadowing the Miller/Mallett victory with complaints, congratulate them on a job well done.
