Top 10 Moments of the 2012-’13 Sports Year at NDSU

t has been another year to remember for the Bison athletic program and Sam is expecting me fit them all into a list of 10? Well, here goes nothing… 10. Marcus Williams returns an interception for a touchdown against Youngstown State. A year after losing to the Penguins, the Bison got their revenge and then some by smothering Youngstown, 48-7.

  • Top 10 Things to Look for in 2013-’14

10.) Keep on building The NDSU soccer team brought in a young group with high expectations. • NDSU’s Most Successful Season Doesn’t Feel That Way

It’s no secret that the football team here on campus puts Bison Athletics on the map. Accompanied by the traditionally strong volleyball and superb cross-country programs, the fall season has many highs. But everyone this side of the Red River knows football is king at NDSU.

  • Peters Bowls Perfect Game in NDSU’s Memorial Union

Contributing Writer For the first time in the history of the Recreation and Outing Center located in the Memorial Union on NDSU’s campus, someone bowled a 300 – a perfect score. Adam Peters, a member of NDSU’s club bowling league, threw 19 strikes in a row a week and a half ago to get to that 300 mark.

  • Homosexuality and Sports

“Sports are a mirror of our culture.” I ran by this quote my freshman year in college, and unlike most of the things I have learned at this school, the quote has bought beachfront property in my brain. This is mainly why I am never surprised when sporting events intertwine themselves seamlessly into our American culture.

  • Ten Thoughts from Saturday’s Spring Game

A Fargo weekend finally felt like spring this year, but 4,921 NDSU fans spent two hours of their Saturday afternoon in the Fargodome watching the 2013 Bison football team for the first time. In a nontraditional spring game, the offense went against the defense instead of mixing teams, with defensive scoring based off of interceptions, fumbles, touchdowns, safeties and 3-and-outs.

  • Bison Roundup

Baseball A few unearned runs in last Wednesday’s game turned out to be an unfortunate downfall for the Bison baseball team, as they lost 5-3 to Minnesota at Siebert Field in Minneapolis. In the second inning, second baseman Wes Satzinger hit his first home run since a wrist injury in March to put the Bison up early.

  • Softball Completes Sweep Against SDSU

  • The Wild Diary

Excerpts from the Sports Czar’s personal diary… 6:30- On the warmest day of the year in Fargo, all I have been thinking about is hockey. It comes down to this! The Wild win and they are in the playoffs, simple as that. 6:43- First stoppage and Antony LaPanta is telling me the Wild have “the first five shots of the game.

  • Fans Cranking up Spring Game Weekend

Spring football is coming to a close for NDSU and the public is gearing up for another spring game and the first tailgating session of the year Saturday. For the players, it’s just another scrimmage that marks the end of spring football. But for Bison fans, the spring game has become much more than that.

  • NDSU Student Brings Joggling to the Fargo Marathon

NDSU Student Brings Joggling to the Fargo Marathon

Over 24,000 participants run in the Fargo Marathon. Ivan Schleppenbach will be the first of his kind. The NDSU freshman plans to run and juggle simultaneously in the half marathon, something no participant has done in any of the races. The term is called joggling, and Schleppenbach has only been doing it for six months.

  • Bold Calls: The 2013 NFL Draft

Let’s face it; the first three weeks or so after the Superbowl suck. Overcoming the lazy hung-over Sundays without watching AP trample through defenders can be a daunting task. It leaves a hole in the sports world, leading us to watching regular season NBA game or even worse, actually studying.

  • Johnson’s No-Hitter Highlights Doubleheader Sweep of SDSU

Johnson’s No-Hitter Highlights Doubleheader Sweep of SDSU

HED: Johnson’s no-hitter highlights doubleheader sweep over SDSU Whitney Johnson has been there before. The Bison defeated the Jackrabbits 10-1 in the nightcap to complete the doubleheader sweep at Gate City Bank Field in the Fargodome.

  • We Want Wentz

Will the NDSU backup QB see the field more?

A football coach will tell you there is no greater luxury than having depth. And there is nothing more comforting than having a solid backup quarterback. In NDSU’s case, they have the depth and a sophomore in which they think will be next in line to lead the Bison.

  • Softball Sweeps Fort Wayne

The NDSU softball team remains unbeaten in the Summit League after sweeping Fort Wayne in a three-game series over the weekend. The Bison beat up on the Mastodons 3-1 and 4-1 on Friday and 8-4 Saturday. NDSU is now 8-0 in conference play and 22-13 overall.

  • Fantasy Minute

All right fantasy owners, sabermetric hardos and overall baseball nerds. It’s time to talk fantasy baseball. Think your stuff don’t stank because you’re 3-0? Think again. The fantasy baseball season is a long, traitorous journey making adding, dropping and trading players a necessity.

  • A Somber Day in Boston

Where do large sporting events go from here?

A peaceful day turned tragic. A historical event made history for wrong reasons. The Boston Marathon ended Monday afternoon with sirens, screams and confusion. After two small-package bombs went off near the finish line, killing three and injuring over 100, it still is hard to reflect on what actually transpired.

  • Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Fort Wayne

The NDSU baseball team battled Fort Wayne Sunday in a doubleheader that saw both games come down to the wire. NDSU’s comeback in the first game fell short in a 4-3 loss but the Bison came back and rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth to win the second game 6-4.

    Meet-a-Bison: Leslie Brost

Senior pole-vaulter Leslie Brost will soon be jumping from her role as a student athlete, clearing the bar and landing on the other side, ready to take on the real world. This Watertown, S.D. native, has been competing for NDSU track and field for the past five years, and has made a name for herself not only in the Summit League, but at the national level as well.

  • Beef With One-And-Dones

Stars always shine the brightest on the highest of stages. This cliché is not only one of the most overused clichés in sports, but it might not even be true anymore. Think back to last Monday and the National championship game and here are the top five players on the court: Trey Burke, Peyton Siva, Mitch McGary, Chane Behanan and Russ Smith.

  • Why is Everyone So Mad at Griner?

The great gender debate has re-fueled. Brittney Griner, the six-foot eight-inch Baylor center, is pushing the boundaries for females again, but she isn’t doing it in a negative way. The fans, and yes, the media, are the ones putting a negative spotlight on this story.

  • Extending the Olive Branch

    It’s Time to Move On

A few weeks ago my editor and colleague Sam Herder wrote a column about how South Dakota State has passed North Dakota as North Dakota State’s main rival in sports. Well, I would like to take Sam’s idea and take it one step further. As a freshman, I am aware that I haven’t been around the UND-NDSU rivalry first-hand very much.

  • The “Hangover II Hype Theory”

My obsession with Will Ferrell began at a young age. In-between episodes of “Stargate SG-1” (nerdy, but cool-nerdy), my father would flip our old-bulky television set to “Saturday Night Live” where I instantly fell in love with the numerous Ferrell characters.

  • Elliot Gives Blues Another Shutout, Beat Wild 2-0

  • The Scare of Coaches Going to Bigger Schools is Gone, For now

Fargo may not sound like the most appealing place to live in many southerners’ eyes, especially when we can still see our breath in April. In fact, I faintly remember seeing a Sam Houston State fan down in Frisco with a sign that read “Win or Lose: At Least We Don’t Live in Fargo.

  • Bison Drop Final Game of Series

The NDSU baseball team was shutout for the third time this season in the series finale in Brookings, S.D. losing to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Sunday, 3-0. The Jack’s Adam Bray and J.D. Moore combined for the shutout, allowing four Bison hits.

  • Anderson Swings to 18th Career Victory, NDSU Wins Invitational

After two rounds of golf at the Kangaroo Invitational at Shoal Creek Golf Club, the NDSU women’s golf team was down by two shots and then surpassed Oklahoma City in the final round Tuesday to win the 10-team tournament.

  • Meet-a-Bison: John Straka

    Meet-a-Bison: John Straka

John Straka has always enjoyed the pressure of sports. As a standout pitcher and quarterback at Chaska High School, Minn., the NDSU ace is used to having the spotlight on him come game time. “I think it has to do with having all eyes on you at a certain point in time,” Straka said.

  • Timing is Everything

It has been said, “It is not how you start but how you finish.” And for the Bison baseball team, they have been spinning their wheels in the slush of this extended-Fargo winter, struggling to keep their head above the flood line to begin the season. Bouncing back last season from years in the cellar of the Summit League, the Bison were the one of the most talented teams in the conference in 2012.

  • 5 Things to Pay Attention to in Spring Ball

With spring ball already one week in, the anticipation to see the 2013 Bison football squad is rising. The team, stacked with seniors with years of experience, will be chasing their third straight FCS national championship. Spring ball is the beginning of that road to Frisco.

  • Meet-a-Bison: Whitney Johnson

Since the first day she visited campus, Whitney Johnson has felt at home while playing softball at North Dakota State. “It just felt right,” Johnson said. “It felt like a family atmosphere.” The five-foot 11-inch pitcher from Lake Crystal, Minn. seems to have made the right choice by coming to NDSU.

  • Men and Women Perform Well in Arizona

Men Last Friday evening, NDSU senior Casey Orgon improved his hammer throw school record to 203-4 in the Mesa Classic in Mesa, Ariz. In the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe earlier in the day, Orgon threw 201-11 to take fourth in the hammer throw section. Redshirt freshman Brandt Berghuis and senior Blake Elsen also participated in the Sun Angel Classic’s hammer throw, both posting their personal bests.

  • Bison Sweep Series at Western Illinois, 3-0

  • Time to Look in the Mirror

Tonight is the pinnacle of big time college athletics. And for some reason, my mind will be elsewhere. If you have pulse and are aware of any headline that passed through the ESPN ticker, you have noticed the excessive amount of “scandals” surrounding college basketball.

  • Candidates Meet with Rugby Team

    Candidates Meet with Rugby Team

Student body presidential candidate Robbie Lauf and vice presidential candidate Erik Diederich met with the NDSU club rugby team last Wednesday and discussed their ten-point platform on how to improve NDSU. “It’s definitely the most fun part about campaigning is getting to go visit organizations,” Lauf said.

  • The All-American Bison

Do you ever wonder what it would feel like to be one of the greatest NDSU Bison wrestlers? First you need to image winning a career 109 wins, second you need to image beating two-time NCAA champion of Iowa for All-American honors, then you need to image placing fifth at NCAA Wrestling Championships and finally you need to find Trent Sprenkle on campus and ask him how it feels to be one of the best.

  • NDSU Marksmanship Club Makes Strides at Nationals

Two years ago it was the pistol team. Last year it was the rifle team. This year, everything came together for the NDSU Marksmanship Club team, sending both its teams to the 2013 College Club Championships in Fort Benning, Ga. NDSU finished fifth overall after posting some of their best shooting scores individually.

  • Bison Power Past Northern State to Sweep Doubleheader

The NDSU baseball team had their way with Northern State over the weekend, sweeping a doubleheader by the scores of 5-2 and 16-2 in the Metrodome. John Straka recorded his first career save in the first game as he pitched three scoreless innings. David Ernst pitched the first four innings, allowing one earned run on five hits, one walk and one strikeout for the win and improving his record to 4-2.

  • Finding Inspiration on the Mat

It was a historic weekend for the Bison wrestling team. Trent Sprenkle put on quite the show placing fifth in the NCAA Wrestling Championship, locking in a spot on the all-American list. There has been a lot of Bison athletes named all-American this year but in Sprenkle’s situation, this one is special.

  • Softball Splits Pair of Games Against No. 20/25 Nebraska

  • Disappointing Volleyball Season Draws Questions for Head Coach

The Summit League Volleyball Championships were held this weekend right here on campus. These games are always filled with intensity, so you certainly got a treat if you decided to watch at the BBF. You may have even gotten lucky enough to sit by one of the Bison volleyball players during these games.

  • Unmasking Unreal Expectations

The Bison football team has been on one mission this season: to return to Frisco. With Saturday’s win in Normal, Ill., the team took one step closer in completing their ultimate goal. Locking up their second MVFC title in as many years and securing the number one seed in the FCS playoffs, the Bison have successfully paved the road to Frisco to come through the heart of Fargo.

  • Bison Cross Country Finish out Season in Springfield

NDSU’s cross country season closed out for the men and women Friday at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Springfield, Mo. The women finished a school high seventh place at the meet while the men placed 26th. For the women, it was a very close team race. As a team, the Bison were only behind the sixth and fifth place teams by less than 15 points.

  • Rivalry Renewed

No. 1 NDSU to face No. 16/20 SDSU for Dakota Marker and Guaranteed Share of Conference Title

Earlier this fall I brought up how the Bison football team has formed several new rivalries within the Missouri Valley Conference since joining back in 2008. Saturday’s battle won’t be anything new at all. The Fargodome will host old rivals for the 99th installment of the NDSU vs.

  • Brock’s Bruising Struggles

A Struggling Jensen May Doom Bison if Adjustments Aren’t Made

It is very tough winning a football game when your offense puts points on the board for the other team. The NDSU football team has beaten these odds two out of three times, the last of which came this past weekend at Missouri State. Right now, the once high-powered Bison offense is struggling.

  • The Ojuri Omen

As the Season Wears Along, Ojuri is Just Getting Started

Let’s be honest, this Bison team doesn’t have what a lot of cool kids are calling “swagger.” Even though it has been proven time-and-time again, to play at a high level, “swag” is a necessary attribute. However, it doesn’t always need to be blatant. Peyton Manning might have the most “swag” out of any QB in the NFL, but it’s almost unnoticeable.

  • Suit up for Basketball

Basketball is finally back here on the NDSU campus. Both the Bison men and women began their season campaigns with exhibitions on Thursday. The men beat up on Concordia 86-57 and the Bison ladies outlasted Minnesota-Crookston 68-65. There were a couple of things I picked up on and I’d like to discuss them in my column.

  • Women’s Golf Finish Fall Season in Hawaii

The Bison Women’s golf team finished their final fall event of the season Tuesday and Wednesday at the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Invitational women’s golf tournament, finishing 12th out of 12 teams. The tournament was held at the Leilehua Golf Course in Wahiawa, Hawaii.

  • Midnight Madness

The Spectrum sports staff went on a field trip last week. We packed up are bags, piled in the Buick and drove to the infamous BSA. Now when I say infamous BSA, I really mean that large white shed that may or may not be haunted by ghosts of the Bison athletic past.

November 1, 2012

  • No. 1/ No.2 NDSU vs. Missouri State preview

Ranked #1 in the Gridiron Power Index poll, the Bison (7-1, 4-1) are now up a spot to #2 in the FCS Coaches Poll behind #1 Georgia Southern. Scanning the rest of the top 25, Missouri State is nowhere to be found. However, the Bears from Missouri State (3-6, 3-3) have been on an absolute roll lately, winning their last three games, including a smack down on Western Illinois 42-3 last weekend.

  • The Value of a Student Section

Ready for a lecture? Because you’re about to hear one, NDSU student section. To put it blatantly, these last two home games have been a disappointment when it came to the student section being filled out. Now, I get that having full attendance every home game isn’t likely.

  • Bison Cross Country Women Repeat, Men Take 6th

Wahlund leads NDSU women to 2nd straight Summit League Championship

The NDSU women’s cross country team has repeated. Brecca Wahlund, a freshman for the Bison, was NDSU’s first runner to cross the finish line at the Summit League Championships, although her teammates weren’t very far behind. The Bison’s top five runners were placed in the top 15 overall in Rochester, Michigan on Saturday morning.

  • Vikings at a Crossroad

The 5-3 Vikings have been a pleasant surprise for a fan base that expected another season in the cellar. After a surprising loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday night, the Vikings have hit an important crossroad in their season. The way I see it, the Vikings season can go one of two ways: The Vikings take the Bucs game as a wake-up call and have the no-one-believes-in-us attitude leading them into the playoffs.

October 25, 2012

  • No. 3 NDSU vs. Southern Illinois Preview

This Saturday, the number three-ranked Bison football team will look to keep their outstanding play going against the Southern Illinois Salukis at the Fargodome. Southern Illinois proved they aren’t to be overlooked last Saturday with a convincing 38-21 win at Youngstown State, who was ranked 16th at the time in the coaches poll.

  • NDSU Athletic Facilities Have a Lot to Offer to Players

Since making the move to Division I in 2004, NDSU Athletics have continued their traditional winning ways. The Bison proved they can continue to recruit athletes with the best of the Midwest, and these athletes have won numerous championships for the Herd in the last eight years.

  • Bison Defense Among the Best Ever

NDSU head football coach Craig Bohl is usually vanilla in his press conferences. He won’t say anything drastic or say something that will cause a mumble amongst the reporters. But, after last Saturday’s dominant 54-0 win over South Dakota, Bohl stated that this year’s defense is the best he has seen in his years at NDSU.

October 22, 2012

  • Lynx Bandwagon Anyone?

How about them Lynx? You know, the professional women’s basketball team out of Minnesota. They’re in the WNBA finals. That’s right, a Minnesota team made the finals. As of the deadline for this paper (Friday for me), the Lynx are tied 1-1 with the Indiana Fever.

  • Preseason Polls Place Bison 2nd

The Bison men’s basketball team has been on the backburner to football when it comes to NDSU athletics for, well, a long time. Despite a promising start to the 2011-12 campaign, the Bison basketball team hit a wall around mid-season, which ended with them dropping five of their last six games.

October 18, 2012

  • A Letter to You

Dear Bison Nation, I would like to bestow my sincerest apologies for my words in last week’s column. It was foolish of me to prophesize an undefeated season for the Bison football team. If you want to parallel my foolishness with that idiot who tells his pitcher he’s throwing a no-hitter before taking the mound in the ninth, then be my guest.

  • Make No Mistake About It

Well, looks like our Bison are human after all. After being seemingly unbeatable coming off the Youngstown State game, NDSU is now brought back down to earth and seems to be a beatable team after getting upset at home against Indiana State. The Bison aren’t perfect, as I’m sure all of you have now realized after watching the endless amounts of mistakes committed against the Sycamores.

  • Bison Men Finish 2nd to Wrap Up Fall Schedule

The NDSU men’s golf team finished their fall schedule on a high note at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate in Kansas City Tuesday, finishing second. The Bison finished the 54-hole tournament with an 872, shooting a 296 in the final round, to finish two shots behind host Kansas City.

  • No. 4 Ranked NDSU vs. South Dakota State Preview

The Bison look to continue the ‘Gold Rush’ in Sioux Falls this Saturday

It has been a year of transition for the University of South Dakota’s football program. In their first full season in the Missouri Valley Conference, the Coyotes have experienced some growing pains. USD is currently 0-3 in their first three conference match-ups (1-5 overall), with the most recent loss coming by the hands of fellow bottom dweller Missouri State.

  • Bison Men and Women Run Well at UND

Women’s Cross Country The NDSU women’s cross country team took part in the UND Ron Pynn Invitational at the Ray Richards Golf Course in Grand Forks Saturday. With only 52 seconds separating the first and fifth runners of the pack, NDSU went on to maintain five of the top nine finishes in the event.

October 11, 2012

  • No. 1 NDSU vs.Indiana State Preview

Coming off an emotional homecoming slaughter of Youngstown State, the number one ranked Bison will square off in another conference showdown against Indiana State University on Saturday at the Fargodome. The Sycamores will come into chilly Fargo looking to do something they have not been able to do since the NDSU football team joined the conference back in 2008: beat the Bison.

  • Time For Us All to Step Back

High school football player’s death sends small town grievance deeper

As I was scrolling down the WDAY sports page early Sunday afternoon, something caught my eye that sent chills down my spine. No, it wasn’t a headline on how the Bison annihilated the No. three ranked team in the country or on the Concordia Cobbers’ heartbreaking loss against Bethel.

  • NDSU Takes 2nd at Harold Funston Invitational

After winning the Jackrabbit Invitational in Sioux Falls, the NDSU men’s golf team looked to keep the momentum going this past week. The Bison had a great team effort at the Harold Funston Invitational in Huntsville, Texas at Raven Nest. They shot a team score of 877 and ended the invitational as the second best overall team.

  • Destined for Perfection

The year was 1996, a truly great year to be an American. The Summer Olympics were back on U.S. soil in Atlanta, Bill Clinton defeated someone named Bob Dole for reelection, and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony introduced us all to “Tha Crossroads.” What does this have to do with the Bison, you ask? Well, in 1996, a different Thundering Herd won the national title, Marshall University.

October 8, 2012

  • Time to Move On

I think closure is the right word for it. NDSU President Dean Bresciani, Athletic Director Gene Taylor and head football coach Craig Bohl held a press conference last Tuesday that they hope will put an end to the voter fraud fiasco that took the Bison program by storm.

October 4, 2012

  • 6 Bison Athletes Earn Weekly Conference Honors

FOOTBALL Special teams: Adam Keller, K Keller, a sophomore from Red Land high school (Pa.), earned Special Teams Player of the Week in the Missouri Valley Conference after making 4-of-5 field goals and three extra-point points in NDSU’s 33-21 win over UNI on Saturday.

  • Anderson Siblings Lead Both Bison Golf Squads To Titles

What a day for the Anderson family. Senior siblings Nathan and Amy Anderson won individual titles to help the Bison men’s and women’s golf teams sweep the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational at SDSU. • Sports Staff Questionnaire

The sports crew here at the Spectrum is filled with characters. The readers usually hear their words from the reporting perspective, and not so much their personal side. Well, I decided to ask each of them a set of random questions on athletics here at NDSU.

  • 5 Typical Wellness Center Basketball Players

Pick-up basketball games at the Wallman Wellness Center here at NDSU are interesting to say the least. Yes, they are fun and provide some much-needed exercise for college students, but man, there are some characters out there. I have played some games, and there is always that one player that you just don’t like once you see them touch a basketball.

  • Fantasy Football Advice

Fantasy football is a major passion in my life. • Referee Armageddon

No one likes when you beat a dead horse, but this is a peculiar case. The horse is still alive and running the NFL like a totalitarian government. So, I say we keep beating it over and over until Roger Goodell is forced into submission. Now, before you call PETA, hear me out.

  • A Pleasantly Surprised Vikings’ Fans Year

The Minnesota Vikings are tied for first place in the NFC North division and the Green Bay Packers are tied for last. Wait, what? I don’t think many Vikings fans expected to hear that even once this season. Granted, only three games have been played, but as fans of a disappointing team, we’ll take it.

  • Enough is enough

It looks like Joe and I are a little crabby in our columns today. I am also fed up with the off-the-field negotiations that effect on-the-field action in the professional leagues. As Joe stated, the NHL decided to fit in with the other leagues and go into a lockout of their own.

  • The puck stops here

July 4th was truly special for me this year. It wasn’t because Joey Chestnut ate 68 hot dogs in 12 minutes, or the fact the Twins were only nine games back in the Central Division, but because the Minnesota Wild had finally made their move. They signed all-stars Zach Praise and Ryan Suter to monumental contracts that literally made every other Minnesota professional sports owner wet their pants.
