Shooting woes hamper Bison

The Bison men have started the non-conference schedule off the shooting mark. The men have been remarkably inconsistent shooting the basketball, going from shooting nearly 57 percent against Minot State, to hitting under 33 percent of their shots against the Vandals from Idaho.

Sophomore Eric Carlson (#25) goes up for a hook shot against Idaho senior Staffon Johnson (#5) on Nov. 21 at the Bison Sports Arena. Sophomore Eric Carlson (#25) goes up for a hook shot against Idaho senior Staffon Johnson (#5) on Nov. 21 at the Bison Sports Arena.

They looked to turn that around against the Aggies from the University of California, Davis on Tuesday, Nov. 24. The Bison men did a good job of doing so as they came away with the win 63-62.

The Bison were put in an early hole, down 17-2 just over five minutes into the game. But the men battled back and were able to go into the break down by two.

The men were able to put some consistency together in the second half as they took an eight point lead with under five minutes to play. As the time ran off the clock, it got a bit dicey for the men, but they came away with a tight win.

Just like their last win, the men were on the mark, shooting 58 percent from the floor and 40 percent from beyond the arc. They were lead by Eric Carlson and Michael Tveidt, who scored 17 and 16 points respectively.

The men were back at home for a Black Friday matchup with a tough University of Wisconsin–Green Bay team. Unfortunately, the Bison were unable to get the win as they fell 71-62.

The Phoenix played extremely solid defense and the Bison were unable to take care of the ball. The game remained tight going into the half with the Phoenix having a slim three point lead.

The second half became more of the same as the two teams jostled back and forth for buckets. But a three-point jumper by Troy Cotton put the game out of reach at 66-55 with just under three minutes to play.

The men once again were unable to find the bottom of the net as they shot a season low of 32.8 percent. This includes shooting an abysmal 14 percent from beyond the arc. Along with the shooting woes, the men committed 14 turnovers while only forcing five.

There were a few bright spots in the game, and one came from freshman Jordan Aaberg. Aaberg had 12 points, eight rebounds and six blocks. His six blocks were only one shy of a school record.

Both Michael Tveidt and Eric Carlson had 16 points for the Bison.

The men now start the rigors of conference play. They will be on the road to take on the Leathernecks from Western Illinois along with the Jaguars from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis this week.
