Bison Women’s Soccer team opened conference play with a thrilling 2-1, double-overtime victory Saturday afternoon. The struggling soccer squad scratched out their first win in the Summit League despite a valiant effort from the visiting South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
“We battled real hard, defended well, and gave ourselves a chance to win and we did it,” said head coach Matt Cook who was giddy after his first conference win here at NDSU.
The game was locked-up going into the 110th and final minute until sophomore, Anisha Kinnarath made her final dash down the sideline before finding Jordyn Wellenborn with a beautiful cross. Wellenborn finished splendidly with a header, burying the game winning goal and setting the Alumni Day crowd into pandemonium.
It was Wellenborn’s second time finding the twine that afternoon when her first of the day tied the match in its 81st minute. The Bison only put two shots on the net throughout the 110 minutes but made them count.
Redshirt Freshmen goaltender, Sierra Bonham played splendidly again registering seven saves as she stays on pace to break the school record in saves per game.
The Bison moved their overall record to 4-6 and 2-0 at home with Saturdays victory. After a slow start coach Cook made it clear the importance of the upperclassmen to lead this team and find ways to win games.
The Bison hope to keep the momentum going in conference play this Friday with a date in Michigan to play Oakland.
